Project Pick Update for 2025

Project Pick Shatters Records and Aims Even Higher for 2025!

Project Pick is celebrating a truly monumental year, far surpassing all previous records for fruit gleaned and donated to Alameda Food Bank (AFB). Thanks to the incredible dedication of our volunteers and generous fruit donors, Project Pick has achieved unprecedented success in 2025, and the year isn’t even close to over!

The year kicked off with an ambitious initial goal of 8,500 pounds of fruit, a target that was met with remarkable speed on March 22nd. Energized by this early success, the Project Pick team promptly raised the bar, setting a new, loftier goal of 10,000 pounds which was also triumphantly reached on May 10th marking a historic achievement for the program. This considerably outpaces the previous record of 8,143 pounds, set in 2020. But Project Pick isn’t stopping there! With seven months left in the year, we’ve now set our sights on an incredible new goal: 12,000 pounds by the end of 2025!

Project Pick extends its deepest gratitude to the phenomenal group of volunteer gleaners whose passion and hard work are the backbone of this program. A special shout-out to Dena Andersen our Project Pick Co-Lead who not only makes the bulk of the deliveries to AFB but has personally led over 40 picks. We also offer a heartfelt thank you to all the fruit donors who generously shared the abundance from their trees, allowing us to deliver fresh, local produce to those in need within our community.

Do you have fruit to share? We Need Your Help to Reach Our New 12,000-Pound Goal!

As we move further into the year additional fruit varieties will be in season, like stone fruits, apples, and persimmons. If you are an owner of these or other fruit trees and find yourself with more fruit than you can use, please consider reaching out to Project Pick! Our volunteers are ready to come to your home to pick your excess fruit, ensuring it doesn’t go to waste and instead benefits our community.

As federal policy shifts making it harder on those who grow food — and on those struggling to afford to eat, ABG remains committed to supporting AFB by harvesting and donating fresh local food. We stand by our neighbors who are facing food insecurity, and continue to strengthen our community around growing and sharing food. Let’s work together to make 2025 truly historic!
