Alameda Free Seed Libraries History

The Seed Library project launched in July 2020, with a single box placed at 2829 San Jose Avenue. The initial box alone dispensed about 2500 packs of seeds to community members looking to grow food in a time of seed and resource shortages through the end of 2020. Thanks to the Girl Scouts of Troop #33373, project manager Ken Carvalho, and the ABG Board, two more boxes were added.  (Click on these links to Alameda Sun articles for the initial project goals and for the Girl Scouts Silver Award project). Now we have a total of six Free Seed Libraries in Alameda!

2022 was another huge year for ABG's Free Seed Libraries! With your help, we gave away close to 17,000 packets of seasonal seeds. Food inflation in 2022 was 11.8% so those seeds had the potential to help many households with their food budgets.
