Founders Story

Co-founders Amanda Bruemmer and Janice Edwards met at a networking event in San Francisco in January 2010 where they got to chatting and realized they both lived in Alameda. They agreed to meet at Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden to discuss the possibility of working together on a community-building project.

Two months (and many cups of tea later), Alameda Backyard Growers held its first meeting on March 11, 2010 at High Street Station Cafe, where 30 friends and neighbors gathered to hear how they could help “grow some, keep some, give some away” to the Alameda Food Bank.

In this five minute video, Amanda and Janice reflect on how it all began, what the group’s impact has been during its first three years, and what motivates them to keep building community, one veggie at time.
