ABG Wins Prestigious Environmental Award

ABG was awarded the (Alameda County) StopWaste Environmental Leadership Award for Excellence in Community Engagement

For the July 2025 award presentation StopWaste wrote: Congratulations to Environmental Leadership Award winner Alameda Backyard Growers! They deeply engage City of Alameda – Local Government’s community of gardeners in building a healthy food system, with over 150 classes, workshops and events each year. Since 2011 they have harvested and donated over 79,000 pounds of surplus backyard fruit. Want to learn more? Visit: www.stopwaste.org/2025awards

Alameda Backyard Growers was selected because of our commitment to recovering food to help feed the hungry, to educating our neighbors on growing and sharing their own food, and to working with the City and other organizations to keep Alameda green with community gardens and planting and protecting trees.

City Councilmember Tracy Jensen, who also serves as StopWaste Board president, was quoted in the AlamedaPost.com saying: “I am so pleased that these organizations are getting the recognition they deserve…Our city is a better place to live because of their good work.”

Congratulations to fellow awardees CASA (Community Action for a Sustainable Alameda) & OKAPI Reusables for their award in Reusable Foodware Partnership.
