Please see their handout on fruit tree care here.

Spring is here and now is the time to get ready to reward yourself with fruit tree abundance later this year and years to come. Planning, planting, preparation and mature fruit tree maintenance will be covered by Alameda County Master Gardener/guru Birgitt Evans and local fruit tree guru of 35 years, Marla Koss. These two successful local gardeners are combining forces to share tips about all things fruit tree care in Alameda at our next meeting May 15, 2018.

What grows best in Alameda? What is the best root stock? From the beginner to advanced fruit tree gardener this meeting will have something for everyone. Their wealth of knowledge of local soil, weather and trees that find a happy place on our island is not to be missed.

Birgitt Evans our current Alameda Backyard Growers President created a successful garden and nursery business. She has grown her own food on a large scale for the past 25 years. Birgitt has served on several boards, including the Board of the Alameda County Master Gardeners for the past 13 years. She is passionate about growing and raising food and seeks to both encourage and educate others so they can also share the benefits of fresh, healthy, homegrown food.

Marla Koss has thirty-plus years of backyard mistakes and triumphs in Alameda. Marla loves swapping tips and tricks with other island gardeners at Alameda Backyard Growers meetings and events. In the spirit of ABG’s “Grow Some, Keep Some, Give Some Away” philosophy, she donates extra fruit and veggies from her garden to the Alameda Food Bank (including tomatoes, lemons, persimmons, zucchini, peaches and plums) and helps glean local fruit trees as part of ABG’s “Project Pick” fruit gleaning program. Marla serves on the Community Education & Outreach Committee and the Gleaning & Growing Committee. She is also coordinating Project Tree in conjunction with the Alameda Sun.
