While studying cultural relationships with natural ecosystems in Belize, I discovered there was a name for my passion; permaculture. I spent a week working on the Maya Mountain Research Farm, an NGO agroforestry farm in the Maya Mountains, and it opened my eyes to a school of thought and a way of living that was truly sustainable. Natural processes were being mimicked through an integrated design with impressive results; my thought was, why not in cities? One practice stood out with great potential for urban implementation; Aquaponics.
