While some insects attack our vegetables, others are a great help in the garden. Come find out how to get and keep the insects you want. Alameda County Master Gardener Jonathan Draper will introduce us to beneficial insects and their use in organic gardening. He will cover a variety of his favorite “good-guy” insects and some of the “bad guys” that they eat or attack. Learn what plants you can integrate into your garden to bring in the good guys and what you can do to keep them around.
About our speaker: Jonathan became a Master Gardener in 2014. He has led the Master Gardeners’ County Fair workgroup in creating their educational exhibits at the Alameda County fair for the past 3 years. Some of you may have visited the exhibits and remember his signature creations, the scarecrows Tom Tomato & Zelda Zucchini. Jonathan has been a curious observer of insects since his grandfather helped him make an insect collection when he was a child. Besides previous talks on beneficial insects, Jonathan has spoken several times on “Gardening During Drought”. He is currently transforming his own front lawn and border areas into a water-wise & mostly native pollinator garden.
