Great Fruit Tree Hunt – Students Help Find Fruit to Donate

On Sunday, May 4th, 2014 students from Alameda High School and Encinal High School came out to help Alameda Backyard Growers canvas the neighborhood around Franklin Park. They were looking for homeowners (and renters!) with fruit trees who would be willing to share their extra fruit with the Alameda Food Bank.

These students earned community service hours, gained knowledge about food sources in Alameda’s backyards, got to know their neighbors and learned more about Alameda Backyard Grower’s mission! We had a great time working together with these motivated students, and look forward to more student-driven events in the future.

Alameda Backyard Growers (ABG) is a community-wide network of gardeners in Alameda who grow food in their yards and donate extra fruit and vegetables to the Alameda Food Bank. We reach out to the community to provide information about, and increase involvement in, urban food growing. In the process, we get to know our neighbors, have fun, share information and resources, and ‘grow community, one veggie at a time’.
