Saturday, September 14, 2013 from Noon to 4 PM
Starts: 1528 Paru Street, Alameda

Updated 30AUG13: Visit 7 Alameda locations with diverse examples of urban farming, featuring creative horticultural know-how and intriguing D.I.Y. solutions to the most common challenges of gardening by the Bay, including limited space, sunlight, time and resources.

The Tour includes:

  • AN ALAMEDA POINT COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOT emphasizing herbs, flowers and heirloom vegetables
  • FARM2MARKET AT ALAMEDA POINT COLLABORATIVE, a two-acre urban farm with fruit, vegetables, herbs and bees; a must-see for their techniques for raising heat-loving veggies
  • HOME GARDENS featuring fruit, vegetables and herbs in backyard settings ranging from the wildly exotic to the handsomely practical, including a layered permaculture food forest and a successful example of shade gardening
  • HOME GARDENS where fruit, vegetable and herb gardening are brought to a perfect balance with the additional raising of chickens and bees
  • TOMATO TASTING and light refreshments at the final home garden on the tour

Proceeds from this tour will benefit Alameda Backyard Growers and its gleaning program, PROJECT PICK. The suggested donation is $10, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The Tour begins at 1528 PARU STREET, where you will register and receive a map of all locations. Participating gardens range across the island, from Alameda Point to Central Alameda to the East End; biking between venues is highly encouraged. Wear comfortable footwear, bring water and sunscreen. NO PETS (we don’t want to scare the chickens!)
